Two Separate Cuba-Destined Aid Vessels Listed Lost after Departing Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for two missing sailboats carrying relief goods journeying from Mexico to Cuba.
Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Initiated
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine total crew members, as stated by a military release.
The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, the navy said.
The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island struggles through multiple national electricity failures.
"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are outfitted with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," an official associated with the mission commented.
The nine crew members are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are working closely with the officials and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Recent Humanitarian Shipment
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the country.
That boat, called "Granma 2.0" after the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and foodstuffs.
Wider Geopolitical Context
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over fifty thousand surgical procedures called off in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic tensions have increased in recent months, with statements from different officials highlighting the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.
Responding to recent statements, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks had begun, although their present status remains unclear.
The maritime authorities said it was committed to using all of the resources at its reach to locate the boats and guarantee the well-being of the sailors.
At this time, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
