The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
