The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will independently develop the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders and Parent Company
The recent development deepens the continuing tension among the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders maintain how the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, which match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he will develop other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
