A group of six quirky but resilient children encounter the way of a colossal and terrible paranormal darkness that has infiltrated our existence from the outer limits of oblivion. They are compelled to wage a lifelong battle battling it, experiencing horror after horror in the process.

A Resonant Storyline with a Fresh Twist

This outlines the narrative, roughly, of the master of horror’s novel It (arguably his finest; undeniable). It is also the plot of King’s son Joseph Hillstrom King’s recent massive horror novel, in which a band of six invoke the primordial, utterly malevolent dragon the Dragon King from the Endless Night to assist them in vanquishing some baddies. As one might expect, their arcane ceremony goes awry.

Embracing a Literary Legacy

The author began his writing journey striving diligently to distance himself from his famous father, using the pseudonym he still uses today and eschewing in-person meetings with his agent (he bears a strong similarity to his dad). But in this latest novel, he leans into it. Certain passages that deliberately echo some of his father’s iconic (the famous Dark Tower introduction); a scene that evokes a recurring theme in King’s works (a battle of wits). In this epic story, Hill is delighting in his family connection, and the audience revels alongside.

Meet the Central Figures

Back to those friends: five of them are scholars at the imagined Rackham College in Maine. There’s Arthur, academic and gifted, deciphering historical enigmas in his leisure hours; Colin, rich, astute, and known for crushing those who oppose him; the twin siblings; the attractive the lovely Allie. And there’s Gwen, who isn’t their classmate, but assumes a vital role of their group as they dabble, somewhat credulous, partly skeptical, in supernatural practices.

The Pivotal Ritual

Our hero becomes, for reasons we don’t need to go into, compelled to pilfer rare books from his cherished academic collection by a set of regional villains. This wounds his academic spirit, especially when he’s made to take the institution’s prized and unsettling title: the diary of adept the historical figure (condemned “for trafficking with the devyll in 1703”; the book’s jacket is fashioned from his hide). These young investigators peruse the diary, discover they could summon what Crane describes as a “proud worm to help Arthur out with his coercion issue – and spend the rest of the novel facing the fallout. The dragon will certainly eliminate those problematic neighborhood criminals, but they are required to pick a new sacrifice each year or succumb to the dragon’s wrath. In the character’s own words: “You plant seeds of destruction, all you get is more dragons.”

Stylistic Fluidity and Imaginative Range

Covering a generation, Hill also moves with natural fluency through various literary forms: as the allies strive to manage the predicament they find themselves in by, variously, picking people who are obviously evil to sacrifice, or searching for methods to kill the dragon themselves, we transition from suspense to shadowy tale, clandestine torment to affectionate subplot to fright. One particularly memorable shift was to a adventure narrative, far beneath the surface beneath this UK region, a part tinged by the fantasy maestro that was wonderfully frightening.

An Expansive Tapestry of Fear and Courage

The novel features trolls – the classic variety and online ones, truly terrifying and perfectly brought to life. We see enchanted blades and treacheries, heart-stopping scenes of bravery and instances of dreadful evil, both earthly and extraterrestrial. This is a remarkable achievement: a horror novel that is chiefly a ode to the imagination, and to affection and camaraderie. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the companions gather at the table, making preparations to call forth their serpent to life with the power of their thoughts.
