The Contents of that Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison built from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.
Heads Up: This discussion details significant events for the second part of the final season.
Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.
Like many elements of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. The man in the cavern is that employee.
So, What's in the Case?
Given what is known about his research, the container almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. From then on, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was possessed by the entity in the past.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
