NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Citizens to Report ICE Footage Following Arrests of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has launched a fresh online portal asking residents to provide visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement throughout New York. This action comes just a shortly after a high-profile immigration operation shook NYC's Chinatown, sparking large-scale outcry.
American Citizens Detained In ICE Operation
A US congressman disclosed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were detained and detained for "nearly 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations broke out in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Every New Yorker has the right to reside free from terror," the attorney general declared in a release.
"Anyone who observed and recorded immigration enforcement yesterday, I urge you to provide that material with us. We are committed to examining these submissions and evaluating any legal breaches."
Portal Features
The platform provides fields to upload photos and videos of the raid, along with a section to specify where it occurred. When submitting, users must tick a checkbox that acknowledges that "authorities could utilize any evidence provided in a public document, including in a lawsuit or public report."
Information about the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which observers say featured dozens of federal agents, happened in a well-known district of the city where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are sold daily widely – frequently to sightseers.
Videos of the incident depict numerous masked and armed personnel securing and holding a person, and shoving away onlookers. Throngs of residents pursued the officers down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the urban roads.
Official Reactions
At a Wednesday press conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four American citizens were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be detained for without cause." He said the persons were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he said. "This represents a militarized effort to incite tension. It is purely a pretext to provoke conflict for federal officials to utilize the armed forces to stop conflict that they have created."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the federal action quickly spread – all three political contenders criticized the raid, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Repeatedly, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, not safety. It must stop," a contender declared.
The city's immigrant rights groups expressed outrage as well.
"Immigration agents targeted Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, masked agents and protective equipment to target street vendors working to survive. This raid had no connection to public safety and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and communities," remarked the head of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the organization has said it does not take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, independent reporting has discovered that more than 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by immigration authorities since the start of the present government.
Recent Pattern
Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in New York and nationwide lately.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Rallies against immigration enforcement are widespread along with accusations of force and cruel conditions.
Most recently, a submission filed by civil rights groups alleged medical neglect of women with child in detention centers.
