We are checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
